State alcohol laws: what time can you buy alcohol (2023)

How do state liquor laws limit the hours alcohol is sold?

Some states simplify with a single hourly rate for all types of alcoholic beverages in all types of sales.

But in general, alcohol sale times are dictated by:

  • Type of branch/company. On-site sales are drinks purchased from restaurants and bars. Outside sales are bottles or cans that you buy from supermarkets, convenience stores, and liquor stores. Some jurisdictions regulate hours of work based on the type of business, not just the type of sale.

  • type of alcohol. Some states set opening times based on whether you're buying liquor, wine, or beer, with definitions. Some break it down by ABV (alcohol by volume), so stronger drinks are more restricted.

  • Day. Alcohol sales opening hours usually vary depending on the day of the week and sometimes before or during public holidays.

Here's how to get to know your alcohol laws by state and jurisdiction

For most of us, knowing the state liquor laws is a matter of convenience.

Workers who serve or sell alcoholic beverages can face major legal problems if they misunderstand when, where and how alcohol sales take place. Many jurisdictions have criminal and civil liability.

And soTraining for alcohol vendors/operatorscan be so important. In some states this is required by law, but in other cases it's just a good way to protect yourself from breaking the law. Take a look at our catalog of state-recognized courses in your area!
